Grease traps come in many sizes from the small domestic under sink grease traps, which often lead to a septic or greywater tank, to large commercial traps used in restaurants and mine sites where large amounts of grease and fat are generated daily.

Grease traps and drains rely on the action of naturally occurring bacteria to break down waste and keep them free flowing. Too much waste, an inadequately sized or positioned grease trap, or not enough of the right bacteria can disrupt this action.

This can quickly lead to blockages as grease and fats accumulate in and around the drains as well as in the trap itself. Problems also arise from the use of caustic cleaners which temporarily dissolve grease and fat, moving them out of the grease trap into the pipes, where they fall out of solution and again, cause blockages.
